Legacy Health's decision to close the birthing center at Mount Hood Medical Center, its Gresham hospital, has antagonized the health system's own employees as well as lawmakers, patients and regulators. A parade of critics pilloried Legacy and its unilateral decision to close the maternity ward at a legislative hearing Tuesday. Among the witnesses were current or former Legacy Mount Hood employees, who argued closing the birthing center was medically dangerous and would hit hardest east Multnomah County's poor and under-represented communities.
